London Met has been widely recognised for its contribution to implementing sustainability improvements in previous years and the University has won numerous awards for its environmental performance. From being announced as the best university for carbon reduction in 2015 a²Ô»å 2017, to winning the Green Apple Awards 2018 and  in 2019, the University is continually improving its sustainability efforts and looking for new ways to save energy and help protect the environment.
The University's environmental improvements are achieved by developing excellent working relationships with the Infrastructure, Projects and IT teams, implementing energy projects and creating a programme of behaviour change.
Initiatives include upgrades to our rooftop gardens at both Holloway and Aldgate campuses, with re-instatement of gardening clubs to follow, rehoming of 40,000 bees to our Holloway campus in May 2023, Green Impact programme for staff at London Met as well as  across the campus as part of a campus wide programme and installing 221 solar panels on the roof.
By developing new initiatives and continuous collaborative work between students, staff and our key stakeholders London Met previously reduced its carbon footprint by 78% during 2019-20 from a 2009 baseline figure and met the 2020 target four years early.
Following this success, and as part of wider estates strategy, London Met have set further reduction targets based on a 2018/19 base year.
The University has set these new and ambitious targets to continue reducing operational impact on the environment even further. Details of these targets and the new Carbon and Environment Management Plan can be found on pages 16 and 17 of the Estates Strategy.
London Met is dedicated to building a sustainable and fair future for everyone by embedding the into the values and operations of the University. In response to the UN’s urgent call for action, we’ve integrated the SDGs into our Estates Strategy, using this global framework to guide our sustainability efforts. We strive to create opportunities for our students and staff to contribute to solutions that advance these goals, creating a greener, more inclusive future both within our community and beyond. See how we're advancing the SDGs.
